GSA Lowers Mileage Rates for 2020

The mileage reimbursement rates for federal employees traveling for work will be slightly lower in 2020.

Federal employees who use their personal vehicles for work will notice that they get just a little bit less money back when they travel in 2020.

The reimbursement rates for 2020 are $0.575 per mile, down from $0.58 per mile in 2019. In 2018, they were $0.545 per mile, so this year’s mileage rate is still 5.5% higher than it was two years ago.

The reimbursement rates are published by the General Services Administration and compliment the standard mileage rates that the IRS publishes that are used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Other mileage reimbursement rates listed by the GSA for 2020 include:

  • Motorcycle: $0.545 per mile
  • Automobile (if a government-furnished car is available): $0.17 per mile
  • Airplane: $1.27 per mile

The complete listing of GSA’s mileage reimbursement rates is available on the GSA website.
