OPM’s Retirement Backlog Remains Relatively Unchanged in September

OPM’s retirement backlog saw little change during September.

The retirement applications backlog at the Office of Personnel Management showed little change in September.

The total backlog now stands at 18,274 cases, down just slightly from August where it stood at 18,570.

6,244 claims came in during September and OPM processed 6,540. The number processed was an improvement by 12% over August in which only 5,836 were processed.

The backlog remains higher than it was around the same time period in the last two years. It was 17,376 at the end of September 2019 and 17,628 at the end of September 2018.

Average Processing Time in Days represents the number of days starting when OPM receives the retirement application through final adjudication.

*Initial retirement cases produced in less than 60 days, on average took 47 days to complete; whereas cases that were produced in more than 60 days, on average, took 117 days to complete.
